Ruse–Veliko Tarnovo Motorway: A Strategic Investment in Transport Connectivity and Regional Economic Development

31.08.2026

The construction of the Ruse–Veliko Tarnovo Motorway is one of the key infrastructure projects in Northern Bulgaria, with the potential to improve access to industrial zones, facilitate freight transport and strengthen Ruse’s position as a major logistics and investment hub.

Construction of the Ruse–Veliko Tarnovo Motorway is progressing, with an inspection of the works near the village of Peychinovo carried out in late August 2026. During the visit, Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Ivan Shishkov provided an update on construction activities and the next stages of the project.

The Ruse–Byala section and the Byala bypass are being developed with European co-financing, with completion targeted for the end of 2028.

Progress on Key Road Infrastructure

The Ruse–Byala motorway section is approximately 40 kilometres long and includes several major engineering structures.

Among them are two large viaducts: one approximately 700 metres long and up to 85 metres high, and another nearly 800 metres long and around 45 metres high.

Construction works include the development of the motorway alignment and the necessary structures to overcome challenging terrain. Particular attention is being paid to engineering solutions adapted to the area's specific geological conditions, including loess soils.

Preparations are also underway for the next stage of the motorway, extending from the Byala bypass towards Veliko Tarnovo. In August, plans were announced to commission a detailed spatial development plan for the route.

Improved Transport Connectivity and New Business Opportunities

For Ruse, the motorway is strategically important far beyond improvements to the road network.

Located on the Danube River at the Bulgarian–Romanian border, Ruse serves as an important transport and economic gateway connecting Bulgaria with Central and Eastern Europe. The new motorway will improve access to the country's interior and its main national transport corridors.

For manufacturing and logistics companies, this development has the potential to support more efficient supply chains, better freight transport operations and improved access to domestic and international markets.

The improved road connection will complement Ruse's existing advantages, including the Danube Bridge, port and railway infrastructure, proximity to Bucharest, and established industrial areas.

Infrastructure as a Driver of Investment

Transport infrastructure is a major factor influencing the attractiveness of an investment destination.

Ruse has a strong industrial heritage, established manufacturing companies and opportunities for new investment projects in the Eastern and Western Industrial Zones, LVZ Industrial Park, Ruse Free Zone and Ruse Industrial Park in the Slatina area.

The construction of the Ruse–Veliko Tarnovo Motorway, together with the planned development of intermodal infrastructure, will create opportunities for better integration of road, rail and river transport.

This connectivity is particularly important for export-oriented manufacturers, international trade, industrial production and logistics services.

The Ruse–Veliko Tarnovo Motorway is not merely a transport project, but a long-term investment in the economic potential of Northern Bulgaria. Its completion is expected to strengthen Ruse's connections with national and European transport corridors, creating additional opportunities for business development and attracting new investment to the region.
