Ruse Mayor Pencho Milkov Presents the Vision for Ruse Airport Development at Green Transition Forum

02.06.2026

Ruse Mayor Pencho Milkov took part in the sixth edition of the Green Transition Forum – a leading international platform for Central and Eastern Europe focused on sustainable development, competitiveness, innovation, and the future of European regions.

At the invitation of Todor Ivandzhikov, Chairman of the Bulgarian Aviation Industry Association, Mayor Milkov joined the panel discussion “Small Airports, Big Impact: Balancing Sustainable Connectivity, Economic Resilience, and Regional Development,” where he presented the Municipality of Ruse’s vision for the development of Ruse Airport as a key component of the region’s transport and logistics infrastructure.

In his remarks, Pencho Milkov emphasized Ruse’s strategic role as an industrial, logistics, and transportation hub along the Danube River and as a natural gateway connecting Bulgaria with European markets.

“Regional connectivity is directly linked to competitiveness, investment attraction, and the creation of new economic opportunities. Ruse Airport is an important part of the long-term vision for the development of Northern Bulgaria and for strengthening the region’s economic potential,” the Mayor stated.

During the forum, the progress of the Airport Master Plan was presented. The concept envisages a phased modernization of the airport infrastructure and the creation of conditions for regional passenger services, logistics operations, general aviation activities, and innovative air transport solutions.

Among the strategic objectives are developing the capacity to accommodate Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft, implementing an Instrument Landing System (ILS), and achieving compliance with international safety and operational standards.

Special attention was given to the sustainable and innovative solutions incorporated into the airport’s long-term development concept. These include preparations for the use of sustainable aviation fuels, energy-efficiency measures, and the establishment of a dedicated unmanned aerial systems zone. Opportunities for future cooperation with the Bulgarian company Dronamics in the field of cargo drone transportation were also discussed.

Ruse’s participation in the Green Transition Forum reaffirms the city’s ambition to position itself as a modern logistics and investment hub, leveraging its strategic location, industrial capacity, and transport connectivity to attract new investments and create sustainable opportunities for economic growth.
