The potential resumption of commercial flights from Ruse Airport is among the initiatives being discussed to improve the region’s transport accessibility and create more favourable conditions for business, investment and tourism.

Concrete steps towards the development of Ruse Airport were discussed during a working meeting at the Ministry of Transport and Communications between Minister Georgi Peev, Deputy Minister Hristina Velinova and Ruse Mayor Pencho Milkov.

The discussions focused on the possibility of resuming commercial flights by making effective use of the existing airport infrastructure and buildings, without the need for substantial initial investment.

Air Connectivity as a Driver of Economic Development

For Ruse, the resumption of air transport would be important not only for passenger services but also for strengthening international economic relations.

Improved transport accessibility could facilitate travel for business representatives, potential investors and international partners, while creating additional opportunities for the tourism sector.

Ruse already benefits from several strategic advantages, including its location on the Danube River, its direct connection with Romania via the Danube Bridge, established railway and port infrastructure, and well-developed industrial zones.

The resumption of commercial flights would complement these transport connections and strengthen the city's position as an economic and logistics hub in the cross-border region.

Next Steps Towards Resuming Commercial Flights

During the working meeting, the participants reviewed the procedures and requirements associated with restoring airport operations.

Among the options discussed were domestic flights and services to destinations within the Schengen Area, which are subject to simplified border control arrangements. Flights to destinations outside the Schengen Area would require additional border and customs control facilities.

As a next step, the Ministry of Transport and Communications and Ruse Municipality plan to organise an expert meeting with representatives of aviation operators by the end of October 2026.

The aim is to discuss specific operating conditions, potential service arrangements and the sequence of actions required to resume commercial flights.

Integrated Transport Connectivity Along the Danube

The discussions also addressed the development of the Danube transport corridor, which plays a strategic role in international trade and logistics.

Topics included improving navigation conditions through effective dredging operations, developing ferry connections and port infrastructure, and making more efficient use of the Danube as a European transport route.

The combination of road, rail and river transport, together with the potential restoration of air services, could provide additional advantages for companies engaged in manufacturing, logistics and international trade in the region.

The development of Ruse Airport represents an opportunity to build on the city's existing transport potential and enhance its attractiveness as a destination for investment, business partnerships and international cooperation.
