This week marked the start of construction work for the modernization of the traction substation in Chervena Voda village. The project, which is of strategic importance for the development of the railway network in the region, is being implemented by the National Railway Infrastructure Company (NRIC) and is expected to be completed by early 2026.
At the official launch event, the Deputy Mayor of Ruse, Eng. Zdravka Velikova, emphasized the significance of the project in enhancing the energy efficiency, reliability, and capacity of the railway infrastructure. According to her, the implementation of this project will ensure faster, safer, and more environmentally friendly transportation, improving Ruse’s connectivity with the rest of the country.
The Chervena Voda traction substation is a key facility on the Ruse – Kaspichan – Varna railway line. The project involves:
The integration of the SCADA system will allow for optimized power supply and better network management, ensuring more efficient and sustainable railway infrastructure operations.
The project manager from the contractor company, Eng. Simeon Kraynev, highlighted that the modernization will be carried out using state-of-the-art equipment that meets European standards. A strong focus is placed on environmental considerations—the new equipment will not contain sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), a potent greenhouse gas. This aligns with the European Union's policies to reduce harmful emissions.
With the completion of this project, Ruse will strengthen its position as a key transport and logistics hub. Reliable railway infrastructure is crucial for the region’s economic development and the attraction of new investments. The project is part of broader efforts to modernize Bulgaria’s railway sector. So far, 22 out of the country’s 54 traction substations have been upgraded, and 28 have been integrated into the SCADA management system.
