Transport connectivity, cross-border cooperation and the development of economic partnerships were among the key topics discussed at an international meeting in Ruse, focusing on the future of the Danube Region and opportunities for implementing joint European projects.
On 6–7 October 2026, Ruse hosted a working meeting of the National Coordinators and Priority Area Coordinators of the European Union Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR). The event brought together representatives from 14 countries, European institutions and partner organisations involved in the region's development.
The meeting was held as part of Bulgaria's Presidency of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region, coordinated by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works.
Ruse Mayor Pencho Milkov participated in the meeting, highlighting the importance of transport connectivity, economic development and cooperation between Danube cities in strengthening the region's competitiveness.
The Danube as an Economic and Transport Corridor
The Danube River is one of Europe's major transport corridors, connecting countries across Central and Southeastern Europe and creating opportunities for international trade, logistics and industrial cooperation.
Ruse's location on the Bulgarian–Romanian border, together with the Danube Bridge, port and railway infrastructure, and established industrial areas, gives the city a strategic role in the cross-border economy.
During the forum, participants emphasised the importance of joint efforts to improve transport infrastructure, strengthen economic ties and reduce regional disparities.
Particular attention was given to Ruse and Giurgiu as neighbouring cities whose cooperation has the potential to facilitate the movement of people, goods and services while creating additional business opportunities.
European Partnerships and New Investment Opportunities
The discussions also addressed opportunities for cross-border partnerships, the involvement of universities and research organisations, and prospects for European funding under the next programming period, 2028–2034.
A key focus was the need to translate the Danube Region's strategic priorities into concrete projects, investments and initiatives that deliver tangible benefits to local economies.
Stronger cooperation between local authorities, businesses and academic institutions can support innovation, improve the investment environment and create new opportunities for enterprises.
Ruse's Role in the European Economic Network
For Ruse, participation in the initiatives of the Danube Strategy provides an opportunity to expand international contacts and promote the city's advantages as an industrial and logistics hub.
Mayor Pencho Milkov highlighted the importance of achieving practical results through European cooperation, including better infrastructure, more efficient transport connections, increased investment and employment opportunities, and improved prospects for young people.
He also emphasised the role of universities, research organisations and businesses in driving innovation and strengthening the competitiveness of cities along the Danube.
Strengthening European cooperation along the Danube can help consolidate Ruse's position as an important centre for international trade, industrial investment and logistics partnerships between Bulgaria, Romania and other countries in the Danube Region.
