The Mayor of Ruse Calls for Updated Environmental Standards and Extended Air Monitoring

06.02.2025

The Mayor of Ruse, Pencho Milkov, held a working meeting with the Minister of Environment and Water, Manol Genov, to discuss key environmental issues affecting the city. The main topics of discussion included the need to update regulations on chemical pollutants, extend air quality monitoring, and strengthen control over industrial emissions.

Stricter environmental standards and expanded monitoring

The mayor urged the introduction of stricter limits on the permissible levels of chemical substances released by industrial enterprises. The goal is to improve pollutant control and ensure cleaner air for the residents of Ruse.

Additionally, Milkov requested that the mobile air quality monitoring station, managed by the Ministry of Environment and Water, remain in Ruse for an extended period. This would allow for more precise data collection on pollution levels and enable more effective regulation of industrial pollutants.

Implementation of an innovative air quality monitoring system

The Municipality of Ruse is actively expanding its air quality monitoring capabilities. During the meeting, the mayor presented progress on the implementation of a modern atmospheric air monitoring system – DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy), which will provide real-time data on pollution levels and enable better control, analysis, and preventive measures against pollution. Ruse will be among the first cities in Bulgaria to utilize such an advanced method for environmental monitoring.

Innovations in combating fine particulate matter

Another key initiative discussed at the meeting was the project to reduce fine particulate matter in the city. The approved plan includes the installation of filtration systems at ten busy intersections, which will contribute to cleaner air in urban areas. Additionally, the Municipality’s strategic environmental measures include intensified street cleaning activities to reduce dust pollution.

Enhancing green infrastructure

The meeting also covered the project for constructing an irrigation system along the city’s quay, which is a crucial step in maintaining Ruse’s green spaces. The mayor sought assistance from the minister to expedite the administrative procedures necessary for launching the project. If progress remains on schedule, implementation is expected by the end of the year.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

Mayor Pencho Milkov emphasized that environmental policy remains a top priority for the Municipality of Ruse. He expressed his expectations for active support from the Ministry of Environment and Water in implementing ecological projects that will improve living conditions, increase investment interest, and contribute to the region’s sustainable development.

With enhanced monitoring and control measures for air pollution, Ruse is positioning itself as a city with a long-term vision for environmental sustainability, creating additional opportunities for attracting new investors and fostering sustainable business initiatives.
